Family Connection was initially known as Shelby Youth Attention Lodge and later Shelby Youth Services and Attention Home. ?The agency began in 1976 through the generous support of community volunteers. ?It is through the generous support of volunteers, business leaders, and donors that Family Connection has been able to continue its mission of strengthening communities by building strong youth and families.
Family Connection has continued to grow to offer a variety of services for children, youth and families. Due to the increasing number of students and families requesting counseling assistance, a School Counseling Program began in 1982.? Through this program, a Counselor is available to go into the public schools and provide counseling assistance to children and youth in crisis situations.
In 1983, the agency expanded its residential shelter services to provide shelter for runaway and homeless youth.? In 1986, the agency purchased 22-acres of land and built an 18 bed shelter facility which also housed the administrative offices. In 1992, Family Connection responded to the increased need for services for homeless youth in Birmingham.?? As a result, Project HOPE Street Outreach Services was opened in 1992 to meet needs for homeless youth in Birmingham through a street outreach program and day shelter.? In 2004, a Community Counseling Center was opened at our Alabaster campus to respond to the increasing need for counseling services among families and youth in our community.
